Estate appeals to thieves who stole decorative iron dragon from castle

DETECTIVES have been called in after thieves climbed to the top of a castle and tourist attraction in South Yorkshire to steal a decorative dragon made of cast iron.

Staff who look after Stainborough Castle, which stands in the Wentworth Castle estate near Barnsley, said they were upset when they realised the dragon had disappeared.

It is thought that the feature, which was specially made for the site and was attached to one of the castle's turrets, was taken sometime during the weekend of June 26 and 27.

The castle is run by the Wentworth Castle and Stainborough Park Heritage Trust and estate manager Michael Klemperer said many visitors had noticed the dragon's absence.

He added: "The dragon has no material value, but great sentimental value to the trust and its staff and was well loved by the public, especially children who visited the site.

"We at Wentworth Castle are greatly saddened by its loss and appeal to the person who has taken it to return it to its rightful position as a piece of public art to be enjoyed by visitors. The police have been informed about the theft."

Anyone who has information about the whereabouts of the dragon should call police on 0114 220 2020 or the Wentworth Castle Trust on 01226 776040.
