Events celebrate older people this Silver Sunday

Elderly people across Yorkshire will be celebrated with a series of events including afternoon teas, choral performances and community cafes on Silver Sunday, October 1 - the day that aims to be to older people what Mother's Day and Father's Day is to parents.

It is the fifth year the annual event, which started with a tea dance and grew to include hundreds of events across the country, will be held in a bid to tackle loneliness and social isolation among older people.

Highlights of this year’s events nationally include a Friendship Matinee at the Royal Albert Hall, featuring a tribute to the rock band Queen by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, workshops by the English National Ballet, and an afternoon tea and tour of Lord’s Cricket Ground.

While in Yorkshire, events include a choir performance at Leeds City Museum, afternoon tea events in Leeds and York and Bupa will be holding tea dances at its care homes across Yorkshire, including Bradford, Bingley, and Leeds.

Event founder, Coun Christabel Flight said: “Silver Sunday has become a great success but I want the Government to designate the first Sunday in October to celebrate older people. We have Mother’s Day and Father’s Day but nothing as such for older people.

“A lot of older people are not able to get out much, so we try to make each event as special as possible to tempt people along. Making that first step out can be difficult but once you do it, it can change your life.”
