A FORMER employee at a popular school in West Yorkshire has been charged with child sex offences.
The man, who has not been named by police, used to work at Garforth Academy at Garforth, near Leeds.
He is accused of nine counts of engaging in sexual activity with a child.
The 29-year-old, from the Garforth area, is also charged with one count of sexual assault against a 25-year-old woman.
He is due to appear before Leeds magistrates on June 18.
The school has sent a letter to parents informing them a former member of staff was facing charges and offering reassurances.
The letter said: “The news will be of shock and concern to you as it is to all concerned with Garforth Academy.”
It continued: “Despite the concerns that we will all feel in regard to this news we would like to reassure you that the academy prioritises the safety of our young people above all else and there is no cause for alarm.”
It could not be contacted for further comment last night.
Garforth Academy has won a string of accolades for its work and has become one of the top-performing schools in the country.
It became one of the first trust schools in the country in 2007, running feeder primary schools in the area.
It was awarded academy status in 2010.
