Ex-depot suggested for park and ride

A former council depot in Beverley could be an alternative site for the town's long-awaited park and ride.

The southern relief road scheme, which includes a park and ride, had been put on hold as part of a cost-cutting exercise by the new Government.

Tory councillor Gary Shores has suggested the former East Riding Council depot on Grovehill Road is used instead.

East Riding Council leader Steve Parnaby said Grovehill had problems, including being the other side of the railway line.

He added: "As regards the bypass we are still hopeful. We are still progressing as though it is going ahead. If the scheme is substantially delayed or cancelled then we will look seriously (at alternatives). We are looking at other sites."

A final decision will be announced as part of the Government's Comprehensive Spending Review in October.

Coun Shores said: "I've held a surgery and constituents have suggested this to me. I am pleased Steve Parnaby is looking at it even before I put the question before the council."

Grovehill has previously been earmarked as a site for a retail development and some residents thought it should have been the site of the new community hospital.
