Ex-Housemartin wings in with ‘World Cup’ anthem

A FORMER member of Hull’s most successful pop group has written an anthem for the Hull and East Yorkshire World Cup.

Ex-Housemartin Ted Key, who writes commissioned songs for special occasions through his business Your Songs, has penned We’re all in the World Cup in collaboration with Nick Langley, another well established Hull musician.

The duo went into the Rhema Studio at Hull Community Church last night to record the song, with the chorus line sung by some of the players who will take part.

Mr Key, who will perform at the tournament, involving national teams each representing a community living in the Hull and East Yorkshire area, said: “The people involved in the World Cup festival heard about Your Songs and asked if I would be interested in writing Hull’s very own World Cup anthem.

“I was delighted to come on board because writing songs for celebrations is what I do. We’ve recorded a rough version of the track and now need to put a few more groovy sounds on it and tidy it up a bit. Then we’re going to get the footballers to sing the ‘la la la’ bits and the chorus.”

A total of 32 teams will take part in the tournament on the all-weather pitches at the KC Stadium on Sunday, July 10.

JJ Tatten, marketing and communications manager at tournament organisers the Goodwin Development Trust, called the anthem “terrific”, and said: “The song is a great way of promoting the event itself – it underlines the hard work everyone at Goodwin is putting in to make the event a real community festival with fantastic football, music and food from around the world.”
