Ex-miner’s widow rejects suicide explanation of death on Spanish holiday

Have your say

THE family of a holidaymaker who plunged from the 15th floor of a Benidorm hotel have rejected claims his death was a suicide, describing him as a happy family man.

Spanish detectives claim Jamie Deakin, 54, killed himself but his wife Susan said she and her family could not accept that conclusion.

Mrs Deakin, of Thurnscoe, near Barnsley, is waiting for the former miner’s body to be returned to South Yorkshire, and said she had spoken to her husband only hours before he died on February 4.

She added: “I spoke to him at around 1am on the night he died, and he’d only had two pints to drink, and was perfectly sober.

“I don’t think that we will ever get to the bottom of it.”

Mr Deakin was in Benidorm with six of his friends and had been on similar holidays before.

Police in Barnsley said inquiries were on hold pending the return of his body.

A spokesman added: “A post mortem examination will be held in due course, and we’ll be speaking to those people who were with him on holiday before the inquest takes place.”
