Ex-police chief to join child hospital board

FORMER chief constable of South Yorkshire Police Meredydd Hughes and the soon-to-be Master Cutler of Sheffield, Neil MacDonald, have both have been appointed as non-executive directors at the Sheffield Children’s NHS Foundation Trust.

The posts attract a salary of £14,210 each year and became available after Peter Lamberton and John Turner finished their terms of office.

The 53-year-old retired as chief constable for South Yorkshire Police last year, after a 32-year policing career.

He said: “I retired in October having delivered lots of work around the Olympic planning and now I want to get involved again in an organisation of value to the public.

“I’m committed to public service and the Children’s Hospital, Sheffield is in the hearts of so many people in South Yorkshire that it’s a real honour.”

Mr MacDonald started out at engineering firm Firth Rixson and is currently group finance director at AES Engineering in Rotherham.

The 55-year-old is also vice chairman of the board of Sheffield Theatres Trust and, later this year, will become Master Cutler.

Mr MacDonald said: “The Children’s Hospital is such a special organisation to be involved with.

“Having just finished a term as a non-executive director at Rotherham NHS Foundation Trust, I really wanted to continue using my new-found knowledge of the health service to improve local services.”

Non-executive directors are appointed for an initial term of three years, and their performance is appraised every year.

Trust chairman Nick Jeffrey said: “The shortlist of candidates was very strong but Meredydd and Neil showed outstanding commitment alongside extensive experience.”
