Ex-steel worker wins TV 'best dish' prize

A steel worker who sold everything he owned to travel the world developing his culinary skills has been crowned the champion of Britain's Best Dish.

Jonathon Davies, from Bradford, triumphed during the eight week competition on ITV, after his food won over a panel of experts and studio audience.

During the contest the 31-year-old steel fabricator so impressed judge John Burton Race with his sweet onion chutney that the celebrity chef described it as the best chutney he had ever tasted.

Mr Davies said: "I would never have imagined that my passion for making excellent cuisine would carry me through to actually winning the show. All I've ever wanted to do is make a living from cooking and now after winning 10,000 cash I have a great shot at that.

"It just shows you with the right focus, self belief and knowledge anything is possible; who would've thought eight weeks ago that I'd be crowned overall champion? It's mind blowing."

Mr Davies is a trained metal fabricator who worked in the family business but he has always had a passion for cooking.

Five years ago he decided to sell everything and travel extensively throughout the Indian subcontinent and many parts of South East Asia – developing a passion for the vast variety of flavours in Asian food.

"All my dishes are about fresh ingredients imported directly from source, I try to deconstruct the ingredients so that each flavour is very apparent on the palate," said Mr Davies.

Mr Davies hopes to invest his prize in pursuing several business ventures including supplying his chutney to supermarkets.
