Exercise classes aim to fight respiratory diseases

A LOTTERY grant of almost £10,000 is set to be ploughed into a new project which aims to tackle lung disease in South Yorkshire.

The cash will be used to set up “Air-ways”, a scheme to help those suffering from respiratory conditions, including asbestos-related disorders.

Asbestos charity Sheffield And Rotherham Asbestos Group (SARAG), has gained the grant funding and will work with Sheffield International Venues (SIV) to deliver the project.

Air-ways will provide a series of free six-week fitness sessions, run by SIV, for people with respiratory diseases.

Pulmonary exercise specialist Jo Strong will lead the twice-weekly classes for up to 15 people and will cover a range of circuit-based activities.

Paula Walker, coordinator at SARAG, said: “This area’s industrial legacy means respiratory health is a major problem across South Yorkshire.

“With these free physical activity sessions run by SIV’s specialists we want to show that exercise can make a difference.”

Exercise sessions will be held at leisure centres across Sheffield that are run by SIV up until January 2013.
