Exhibition charts parents’ decline

Hull-born artist Colin Gray will be returning to the city next week to give a talk about his highly personal and poignant exhibition In Sickness and In Health, which is on display at Ferens Art Gallery until February 26.

Mr Gray will give an informal talk and tour of his work at the gallery next Thursday from 12.30pm.

The exhibition, which forms the final stages of ‘The Parents’ series, features pictures from the past decade recording his parents in their older age leading to his mother’s death in 2004.

The images of Gray’s mother Rene focus on her disability following a stroke, and show his father Ron’s struggle with his role as a carer.

Mr Gray said: “This work has been cathartic, preparing me to face the loss and deterioration I have endured. I have reached the age my parents were when I started the project. Looking at myself in the mirror I see a reflection of my father’s face. I see the history in my own future.”

Coun Terry Geraghty said: “It’s great that the public will have the opportunity to hear about Colin’s artistic practice and why he produced such a powerful body of artwork that is so deeply personal.”
