Exhibition costume designer answers call of the wild

COSTUMES inspired by the wild birds and mammals of Britain have gone on show at Doncaster Museum and Art Gallery.

The exhibition Worn To Be Wild, by Kate Plumtree, features a collection of 17 costumes that have been made by observing the movement, character and habitat of different creatures.

Ms Plumtree used a range of materials and techniques inspired by different periods in history, including dyeing, printing, painting and quilting.

Photographs taken in each creature’s natural environment, as well as fabric samples, reveal each costume’s design, while visitors can also try on outfits in a dressing-up area.

Coun Cynthia Ransome, Doncaster Council’s cabinet member for neighbourhoods, said: “Kate Plumtree’s exhibition is a joy to behold.

“I am sure visitors will be attracted to the vibrant array of bright, rich colours of the costumes and intrigued by how Kate has combined elements of both wildlife and period wear.”

The exhibition is now open and will run until Saturday, July 9. The artist will also hold a Venetian mask-making workshop from 10.30am to 3.30pm on Saturday, June 18.

Meanwhile, the gallery is also currently showing the annual exhibition from members of the Yorkshire Photographic Union.
