Exhibition with designs on making later life a bit easier

OBJECTS which have been inspired by the need to make life easier and more comfortable for older people have gone on display in Sheffield in the last stage of an international exhibition.

The Engaging Design project is a collaboration between the Art and Design Research Centre at Sheffield’s Hallam University and Chang Gung University in Taiwan.

The ideas on display include a chair which has been equipped with a walking stick as one of the legs called Rest Of Your Life and a table which includes a tube with speaking and listening horns at either end, called Hearsay.

The project has been led by Prof Paul Chamberlain, who is head of Hallam’s Art and Design Research Centre and Dr Kevin Tseng, the director of Chang Gung University’s design centre. Claire Craig, a senior lecturer in Sheffield, has also been involved.

A project spokesman said: “The research programme aims to inform our understanding of ageing and how the design of the home and the products within it can support independence and wellbeing in later life.

“We recognise that the design of products and systems for older people should support their health and care needs, but we also see the need for such products to satisfy their wants and aspirations too.”
