Exhibition throws spotlight on the world in miniature

AN exhibition by a group which recreates the world around them in the smallest hand-crafted detail has opened in East Yorkshire.

Fantasia, an award-winning craft group, meets every third Saturday at East Hull United Reformed Church. Members use their imagination and ingenuity to turn everyday objects into pieces that would grace a doll’s house.

Club leader Christine Scott said: “I just love doing it, I’ve been doing it for 15 years.

“We make things, we knit things, we sew things, it incorporates a lot of different hobbies. We are all good friends and it’s a really nice club.”

The display features cigarboxes, bearing the title of a book, which opens up to reveal a scene, while song titles provide the inspiration for other creations.

The club recently came second in a national magazine competition to depict a Jubilee street party.

The group is now entirely made up of women, the two or three male members having left some time ago after health and safety ruled out the use of machine tools.

“We had the choice of paying a really exorbitant fee for insurance or selling the tools, so we sold our tools,” said Mrs Scott.

The exhibition at Hedon Museum will be on show until September 12, every Wednesday and Saturday, from 10am to 4pm.

Admission is free.
