Experts offer tips on historic homes

NATIONAL park bosses are offering expert advice to prevent historic buildings in the Yorkshire Dales becoming "money pits" to owners and occupiers.

A group of experts will be on hand on October 16 to talk about a range of subjects from prevention and treatment of damp to repairing stonework.

The event is being staged in Kettlewell – one of the National Park's 37 conservation areas – by the Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority (YDNPA) and the places have been snapped up.

The authority's Building Conservation Officer Gaby Rose said: "It has been even more popular this year and we were booked up very early on.

"We try to encourage people to carry out preventative maintenance and use the right materials – and not to wait until the building has started to fall down before they take action. This way, homeowners can save a lot of money. With buildings, a stitch in time really does save nine."

This year's programme includes a presentation of upgrading

and saving energy in old buildings, plus practical demonstrations in using traditional materials.

A similar event is planned elsewhere in the National Park next year, for those unable to attend.
