'Experts support' withholding of full case review

The Government claims to have the support of experts in its decision not to publish serious case reviews in full.

Lord Laming, who carried out reviews into children's services after the deaths of Victoria Climbie and Baby Peter in Haringey, has warned against releasing the documents in their entirety.

The Government claims this is supported by "expert opinion including the NSPCC, the Association of Chief Police Officers, the Children's Society, the Association of Directors of Children's Services, the Chief Adviser on the Safety of Children, Sir Roger Singleton and the Deputy Children's Commissioner herself".

Both the Tories and Liberal Democrats, however, insist the documents could be suitably anonymised for release.

Particular criticism focuses on the lack of information in executive summaries.

"Clearly it is important SCR executive summaries are full and thorough so everyone can learn lessons from what has happened in a sufficiently transparent way, minimising the chances of other children suffering similar terrible experiences in the future," said a Government spokesman.
