Explosive action at north Leeds quarry

WORLD War Two ammunition found at Leeds University was destroyed in controlled explosions at a north Leeds quarry.

An army bomb disposal team was called in to destroy the shells, bullets and grenades in six controlled explosions at Mone Brothers’ Blackhill Quarry in Bramhope.

The weapons were found during a routine inspection at the university.

Blackhill Quarry Manager Craig Morrell, said: “The artefacts were deemed too unsafe to be kept at the university and were transported to the quarry where bomb disposal experts were on hand to carry out six explosions with varying degree of intensity.”

Blackhill Quarry has been used for location filming of TV shows Emmerdale, Heartbeat and A Touch of Frost over the years.
