Extra security for homes in burglary battle

HUNDREDS of homes across north Bradford are being secured to help protect them against thieves.

The houses have been identified as ones which could most benefit from the security upgrades in what has become one of the largest initiatives of its type in the area.

Since its launch in March, the project has seen police and partners deliver crime prevention training to about 30 residents and estate workers to help make the community more aware of what they could do to protect their homes.

It is hoped the project will help reassure residents in Allerton by both securing homes and also making them aware of how just a few simple measures can make life difficult for thieves.

Insp Steve Greenbank, of the North Bradford Neighbourhood Policing Team, said: "Crime prevention is one of the best ways we have of helping residents keep their homes safe and beating burglars and we have been very pleased to work with partners on this project.

"By making residents more aware of how they can better protect themselves and also carrying out a significant amount of strengthening work we hope to have a real impact on crime in the area and improve the quality of life for residents."

The North Bradford Neighbourhood Policing Team together with Lower Grange Community Association and other organisations are reinforcing nearly 200 houses in the area as part of a 25,000 Safer Home Project.

The project began last month and will see authorities eventually upgrade about 184 homes on Allerton and Lower Grange with improved security measures.

Authorities hope that residents who have taken part will be able to spread the word about crime prevention and inspire others to take action. Simple steps which residents can take to secure homes include fitting exterior lighting in gardens and setting a low energy indoor light on a timer switch to come on at night.

Alex Dilger, Lower Grange community development worker with Incommunities, said: "This project has reduced vulnerability and builds greater confidence in communities by providing simple but effective targeted crime prevention measures for all."
