Facebook campaigners in bid to prove Chelsea's 'killer' innocent

A FACEBOOK campaign professing the innocence of a British man charged with murdering his girlfriend in Crete had today attracted more than 2,000 supporters.

Chelsea Hyndman, 21, from Castleford, died on the Greek island on Monday after suffering ruptured internal organs which doctors said were caused by physical violence.

Her boyfriend Luke Walker, 22, from Brierley Hill, West Midlands, was formally charged with murder on Thursday.

Ms Hyndman died a day after she was admitted to hospital in Heraklion - the island's largest city - suffering from severe abdominal pain.

She was transferred to the Venizelio hospital where she underwent an emergency operation but died in the intensive care unit.

It is understood Ms Hyndman and Walker were intending to spend the summer working on the island.

A Facebook group entitled: "Luke Walker - Innocent Until Proven Innocent", has been set up on the social networking site, already attracting 2,469 members.

The page, for which membership has to be confirmed, has the caption: "This group is a small attempt to let Luke and Chelsea's voices be heard.

"We all know how much they loved each other and that Luke wouldn't and couldn't harm a hair on that girl's head.

"Please use this group to tell the world the truth about our friend, let's fight the lies with the truth and make people see what we all already know - Luke Walker is INNOCENT."

It was originally thought Walker would face a lesser charge of causing a fatal bodily injury but he was charged with murder on Thursday and remanded into custody.

His lawyer George Koundourakis said he hoped Walker would be granted bail before his trial.

A tribute page set up for Chelsea, from Castleford, West Yorkshire, described her as "one of the most awesome, kindest, fantastic girls you could ever meet".

Last week in a statement her mother Heather Hyndman described her as "full of life" and a "perfect daughter".

She issued a statement through police which said: "We are devastated by Chelsea's death - we cannot believe what has happened.

"The last time we saw her was when she set off for Greece with her friends embarking on a new adventure in her life.

"Chelsea was full of life, very outgoing and a perfect daughter. We have lost not just a daughter but a best friend."
