MORE than 3,500 students from across the country are set to descend on Sheffield next March to take part in the annual British university and colleges sport (Bucs) championships.

Sheffield has been chosen to host the week-long competition for the fourth year running because of its top class sports facilities.

The students will take part in 19 different sports, mainly at sites run by Sheffield International Venues (SIV) – such as the Don Valley Stadium, Ponds Forge, the English Institute of Sport and Concord Sports Centre in the city’s Shiregreen district.

Bucs chief executive Karen Rothery said: “Sheffield offers some of the best facilities for sport in the country and I know students appreciate competing in these world-class venues.

“The Bucs championships bring together some of the finest student athletes in the country who will have fought hard to make it to their respective finals.”

The high points are expected include the men and women’s trophy football finals on March 17 at Don Valley Stadium, the basketball finals at the English Institute of Sport from March 18 to March 20 and the trampolining finals at Concord Sports Centre on March 19 and 20.

The championships also include badminton, netball, tennis, fencing, judo, hockey, snooker, rifle shooting, rugby league and climbing.

SIV’s general events manager Dominic Stokes said: “The choice of Bucs to select SIV for this competition reflects our excellent record on delivering elite events for all levels.

“Bucs recognises our strengths at SIV, which range from providing venues to event management and ticket sales.”

SIV operations director Lorenzo Clark added: “SIV is excited to not only work in partnership with Bucs but be chosen as the event management company tasked with helping to deliver this great event.”
