Fair game... hunting and shooting fans saddle up for show

Now in its fifth year, the event continues to grow while keeping its roots firmly in hunting, shooting and fishing.

As well as favourites such as Ben Potter and his birds of prey and Katy Cropper, winner of One Man and his Dog, there are new features such as the Countryside Adventure Area where all the family can have a go at quad biking, shooting, archery, catapult firing and climbing.

An area called Gamekeepers’ Green has been set aside for learning about the countryside and will be home to experts, demonstrations and a Field Kitchen.

Rob Collins will be demonstrating recipes from his new book about food from hedgerows which is being launched at the Game Fair.

Joining Rob in the Gamekeepers’ Green Field Kitchen will be three times UK BBQ champion Andy Annet, master butcher David Lishman, ITV’s Best Dish winner Jonathon Davies and junior chief of the year Conner Blades.

The Devoted To Dogs section will have hundreds of breeds and types of dogs, with dog events including whippet, lurcher and terrier racing. There is also a fun dog show.

In the Central Arena there will be skilled horseback riding by Galloping Acrobatics, who are known for their feats of gymnastics and equestrian skills.

A popular area of the show is The Falconry Mews where visitors can get up close to a wide variety of birds of prey.

Fishermen and women are also well catered for. There is an area where visitors can pick up tips from the experts, taking part in competitions and top up their tackle boxes.

The event is held today and tomorrow at Stockeld Park, which is off the A661 half way between Wetherby and Spofforth. The postcode is LS22 4AW and the gates open at 8am. Car parking is free all weekend.
