Fake goods vendor pays the price

A MAN has been ordered to carry out 200 hours unpaid work after admitting selling fake designer clothing at a popular East Riding Market.

Anthony Steven Firth, 26, of Cambridge Street, Bridlington, was given a community order for 12 months and told to pay prosecution costs of £1,464 by Hull and Holderness Magistrates.

It followed an earlier hearing at which Firth pleaded guilty to seven offences of dealing in counterfeit goods at Skirlington Market.

Last May hundreds of counterfeit goods worth tens of thousands of pounds were seized from a number of stalls in a raid by Humberside Police, trading standards officers from East Riding Council and the regional Scambuster squad.

During the operation Firth was found to be selling clothing falsely marked with well-known designer brand names. A search of his home revealed a large quantity of counterfeit tobacco.

Councillor Jane Evison said the council would not tolerate the sale of counterfeit goods on local markets. She added: “Legitimate businesses who trade legally find it extremely difficult to compete with those that insist on breaking the law.”
