Fake ‘Nike’ trainers worth £300,000 seized in raids

Working with the genuine manufacturer as well as border authorities, thousands of pairs of trainers were tracked from their importation into the UK through to addresses in Sheffield.

The fake trainers are believed to originate from China and were brought into the UK for a “sophisticated” distribution ring around the country. Two arrests were made and enquiries remain “ongoing.”

Coun Helen Mirfin-Boukouris said: “This is an excellent example of how working with partner agencies can help us tackle this type of problem in Sheffield.

“Trading Standards continue to protect reputable businesses and consumers from illegal practices.”

Graham Wragg, manager of South Yorkshire Police’s economic crime unit, added: “The success of this operation sends a message out to rogue traders here and elsewhere that we are able to take action against this type of illegal activity.”

Brand protection manager at Nike, Chloe Long, praised the “fine work” of the authorities.

She said: “Nike aggressively protects its brand and actively engages with law enforcement agencies and customs globally to stop counterfeit product reaching consumers.

“Counterfeits are likely to be of inferior quality, and Nike is obviously unable to stand behind a counterfeiter’s product.

“If consumers want to buy genuine Nike products we recommend they do so from the store or website of a recognised retailer.”
