Falcon nest eggs boost hopes for region's wildlife

EXPERTS have discovered a new clutch of peregrine falcon eggs in the Yorkshire Dales, giving a boost to the species.

The Malham Peregrine Watch team has confirmed a pair of the birds of prey, who live at Malham Cove, are looking after four eggs in their nest.

It is thought the eggs were laid at the start of April and are expected to hatch next month.

During the 1950s the peregrine population in the UK declined dramatically due to the use of pesticides which caused the thinning of egg shells, and only a very small number of breeding pairs were left in the Dales. But experts say they are starting to thrive again.
