Fall in drink-related town violence

ALCOHOL-related violence in Retford town centre has fallen by almost half over the last year, figures released yesterday by Nottinghamshire Police reveal.

Between April and September 2009 there were 56 crimes linked to alcohol, of which 12 were actual bodily harm (ABH).

However, during the same period this year 29 offences were reported, with 12 of them being ABH.

Sergeant Andy Wilson, who is based at Retford police station, said: "We are not complacent about these figures and recognise we face a challenging time in the run-up to Christmas and New Year, which is traditionally very busy. We want everyone to feel safe whenever they go out and be able to enjoy the night-time economy without the fear of violence."

Chief Superintendent Dave Wakelin, the divisional commander for Bassetlaw, Newark and Sherwood, said he was extremely pleased to see significant reductions in alcohol-related violence in Retford. "We don't want see people drinking to excess and getting into fights. An increase in police patrols along with support from other agencies is making a positive difference and we hope this continues."
