Hundreds of people turned out to catch a glimpse of the stars from the new Dad’s Army film as the scene was filmed in Bridlington.

The production team has spent days transforming the Old Town of Bridlington, East Yorkshire, into the fictional Walmington-on-Sea of the
1940s.

Cast members including Bill Nighy, Toby Jones, Sir Tom Courteney and Sir Michael Gambon were joined by more than 300 extras to create a St George’s Day parade in the High Street.

The long-awaited return of Dad’s Army could give the region’s economy an unexpected boost after a surge in interest in hotels near the seaside set.

Hotel searches in Bridlington on booking site Hotels.com have increased sharply after the first images of the new movie emerged.

A mini city of trailers and lighting units sprung up in the car park at North Landing on nearby Flamborough Head ahead of the first day of shooting few weeks ago.

The 300ft cliffs at Bempton are set to become the White Cliffs of Dover, while Bridlington’s High Street is standing in as the fictional Walmington-on-Sea.

The film was packaged by Wiggin EP and is backed by Screen Yorkshire through the Yorkshire Content Fund. The film, which is directed by Oliver Parker, and sees the hapless volunteers in search of a spy.
