THE family of a man who is lying in a hospital bed with injuries so severe he may never recover have made an emotional appeal for help tracing those responsible.

Dominic Conlan, 56, has spent more than two weeks in a coma after he was found seriously injured at his flat in March Street, York, and yesterday North Yorkshire Police launched an attempted murder inquiry.

His injuries, which include facial fractures and a fractured skull, are so serious that police said yesterday Mr Conlan might not recover.

Speaking outside Leeds General Infirmary, where Mr Conlan is being treated, members of his family spoke of their devastation and urged anyone with information to come forward.

His brother, Martin, who broke down as he read a statement said: "We as a family are absolutely devastated by what happened and cannot imagine the terror he must have felt as the attack continued.

"Dominic is a good man, a loving and caring brother and a trusting and generous friend. He is never happier than when he is helping others and always sees the good in people."

Mr Conlan was assaulted on Saturday, January 8, at about 2.30am at his flat in Patrington House in The Groves area of the city.

Police believe Mr Conlan, who is divorced, allowed a number of people into his home. They have made a number of arrests and a number of people are on police bail.

Mr Conlan suffered several blows, some of which were caused by a weapon.

The victim had in recent years suffered from ill-health but was a successful businessman working in the telecommunications industry.

Police are keen to trace the owner of a white tracksuit top with a green strip or stripes down the arm which may have been discarded by a suspect following the attack.

Anyone with information should contact York CID on 0845 6060247.
