Family climbs highest peaks in UK to aid cancer charity

THE FAMILY of a breast cancer patient from Worksop hiked the three highest peaks in the UK in less than 24 hours to raise money for Sheffield’s Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity.

Richard Mason, 40, was so appreciative of the care his mother Jo Mason, 64, received at Weston Park Hospital that he persuaded family and friends to tackle the challenge. The team has so far raised £4,200.

Mr Mason and a team of family and friends were driven the 450 miles between Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Snowdon by friend Jonathan Stobart, 40.

Mr Mason, a commercial director from Retford, said: “We did this to thank Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity for the care mum received during her radiotherapy treatment.

“The money will support research projects which will help other families now and in the future.”

Mrs Mason was diagnosed with breast cancer last September after a routine mammography, and had radiotherapy at Weston Park Hospital as part of her treatment.

She joined the group at Snowdon to climb the Welsh mountain with them, as the final leg of their journey.

Mrs Mason said: “The diagnosis was a shock as I’ve always been so fit and healthy. I had such good, caring treatment, and now I’m feeling better, we wanted as a family to give something back.

“I could not have had better care and treatment from both Rotherham District General Hospital and Weston Park.

“Taking part was a huge achievement for me. I’ve always been a keen walker and did a lot of training to build up my fitness.”
