Family joins zip wire challenge to say thank you for hospital's care

FOOTBALL stars joined the families of youngsters suffering with serious medical conditions on a high-wire thrill ride yesterday to raise cash for Sheffield Children's Hospital Charity.

Sheffield Wednesday manager Alan Irvine, captain Darren Purse and chairman Lee Strafford all took a trip down the zip wire which was set up at the club's Hillsborough stadium.

Barry Whitlam and Laura Cartwright, whose nine-month-old son Carter has been in the care of the children's hospital since he was born, also took part with seven of their family and friends.

Mr Whitlam, 30, of Handsworth, Sheffield, said: "Until Carter was born I had absolutely no idea that we had some of the best medical equipment and people in the country right on our doorstep and we want to do everything we can to support them."

Miss Cartwright, 28, added: "We wanted to do the zip slide challenge to show our support for the hospital charity because if it wasn't for this hospital, its staff and equipment our son would not be here."

Sheffield's world champion heptathlete Jessica Ennis has given her support to the chairty's latest fundraising effort, Theo's Games, which will take place in July. The sporting event will be hosted by the city's Don Valley Stadium and will centre on a 3km sponsored family fun run.
