Family pays tribute after son dies from blast wounds

THE family of a British Army officer from South Yorkshire who died in hospital three weeks after being wounded in Afghanistan have said they are "heartbroken" by their loss.

Captain Martin Driver, 31, from 1st Battalion The Royal Anglian Regiment, died on Monday after being injured by a roadside bomb in the Musa Qala district of Helmand Province on April 21.

He leaves his parents, his fiance Johanna Sellway and twin brother David.

Capt Driver, originally from Barnsley, was on his second tour of Afghanistan when he was seriously injured by an explosion on patrol in Musa Qala and flown back to the Royal Centre for Defence Medicine at Selly Oak in Birmingham. His loved ones were at his bedside as he fought for life but he died on Monday.

In a statement his family thanked the medical teams who tried to save him and added: "We are heartbroken by the tragic loss of our beloved Martin. He was such a caring young man who always put his family first.

"He died doing a job he loved. His dedication and professionalism will remain an inspiration to all."

Capt Driver had studied Arabic and wanted to join special forces later this year.

Another two soldiers from 1st Battalion The Royal Anglian Regiment were killed in an explosion in Musa Qala on Tuesday. Their families have been informed.
