Family photographs reveal city's Caribbean island links

Images captured by two generations of the same family feature in an exhibition exploring the link between the UK and the Caribbean islands of Dominica and Barbados.

Recent photographs by Tim Smith of the Dominican community in the UK are included alongside his pictures of island life taken during a visit to his childhood home in 2010.

His father Derek Smith's rare photographs of everyday life in the Caribbean during the 1950s and 60s are also on display in the exhibition – Island to Island: Dominica, Barbados and Britain – opening today at Bradford Industrial Museum.

Tim Smith, 51, of Bradford, said: "I was privileged to spend part of my childhood growing up in Barbados.

"Working with the Caribbean communities in Yorkshire was what inspired me to learn a bit more about who they are and where they come from."

The exhibition, which runs until October 31, uses photographs and people's memories to explore the relationship between Britain and the islands and includes formal portraits of people recently arrived from the Caribbean taken in Bradford's Belle Vue Studio during the 1950s and 60s.

The photographs are complemented with stories of people who lived in both places.
