Family stories of First World War sought ‘before links lost’

Local people were encouraged to share family stories of the impact of the First World War on the communities and landscapes of a special corner of Yorkshire.

The centenary project, supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund, called Leeds Pals, PoWs and the Home Front, will focus on the impact of the war on the landscapes and communities of Nidderdale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. It will also tell the story of the Leeds Pals, who were trained in the Masham area.

It was launched on Saturday at a drop-in event at Masham Town Hall. People were encouraged to share family stories, memories or bring along objects relating to the war. It was also an opportunity for people to consider volunteering for the project and helping with historical and archaeological research.

Volunteers will be able to access training opportunities and learn new skills.

Amanda Peacock, WWI
Project Officer, said those behind the project were keen to get
in touch with local people
with family stories as: “....our
links with people who knew
the First World War generation first hand will soon be lost forever”.

The Pals trained in the Colsterdale area before going to war.
