Family urges people to join in festive fund-raising event

A SCHOOLBOY from Hull with cystic fibrosis and his family are urging people to join them for a festive fund-raising event.

Sam Boswell, nine, who attends Endsleigh Holy Child Primary School, will be taking part in the Warner's Health Santa three kilometre Walk & Run in Peter Pan Park/Costello Park in the city on Sunday December 5, with seven-year-old sister Lucy and mother Fran.

Sam was diagnosed with the life-threatening inherited disease at birth. The condition clogs his lungs and digestive system with mucus.

The youngster has to take more than 30 tablets a day to help him to digest food, use a nebuliser and have twice-daily physiotherapy sessions to shift the mucus from his lungs.

Sam said: "I'm really looking forward to doing the run because everyone gets to dress up as Santa and I love Christmas."

Mrs Boswell said she hoped lots of people would join in: "Money raised helps to fund vital research which allows us to look forward to a brighter future for Sam and other children like him."

All the proceeds will go to the Cystic Fibrosis Trust's gene therapy research, which is conducting a trial next year involving putting a healthy copy of the CF gene into the lungs of people with the condition. The event starts at 10am from Warner's on Pickering Road. The route goes through the park and back to Warner's for mince pies and mulled wine provided by Sainsbury's Willerby. A free Santa suit is provided to those who sign up for the 5 registration. For information call Warner's on 01482 505850 or Tina Davis-Johnstone on 0300 859 1024.
