Mrs Dryden, who was completing a Phd course, was pronounced dead at the scene and a post mortem examination later revealed that she had died from a stab wound to the chest.

A family statement said: “Tracy was a loving and wonderful mother, daughter and sister. She had many friends and real enthusiasm for walking, swimming, running and climbing with her sons.

“She was completely dedicated to her two children, whilst at the same time working and completing her Phd. She will be dreadfully missed by us all and is an irreplaceable part of all our lives.”

Residents told how they had often seen Mrs Dryden unloading a bike from her car during the week. She is thought to have used it for commuting to work.

John Dryden, 43, of Thacking Lane in Ingleton, was charged on Saturday with murder and will appear at Lancaster Magistrates’ Court today.
