Famous abbey to provide insight into managing hundreds of deer

VISITORS to one of Yorkshire's most famous beauty spots are being given the chance to find out more about how the estate manages hundreds of deer.

Staff at Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal, near Ripon, have organised the events which are aimed at re-connecting visitors with the origins of food.

Fountains Abbey's deer warden, John Horrigan, will be involved in two events which will be held on Friday next week and the following Friday to give an insight into managing deer.

He will lead a guided tour around the World Heritage site to give the public an opportunity to learn about the 550 sika, fallow and red deer that live on the estate, before a two-course meal at the visitor centre.

A separate event will be held on Saturday, September 25, when visitors will be able to take part in an "autumn forage" to learn about wild foods.

Denise Carter, a member of the Mid-Yorkshire Fungus Group, will oversee the event, at the visitor centre at 10.30am.

The estate's visitor centre will again be the venue for a three-course meal, during which there will be a further chance to discuss the preparation of wild mushrooms and berries.

More information about the events is available by contacting Fountains Abbey on 01765 608888 or emailing fountains [email protected].
