Famous diarist’s writing case goes on display

She was one of the country’s most famous diarists and now a key item that helped make her diaries possible in the first place has gone on show.

Anne Lister, entrepreneur, landowner and “forward thinker” was the owner of Shibden Hall, near Halifax, from 1826 to 1840.

Recently her diaries won a United Nations Award, the prestigious Unesco accolade for “Best of UK Heritage”.

The diaries are held by West Yorkshire Archive Service in Morley and provide a detailed insight into a remarkable and colourful life.

The portable case in which she kept all her writing materials was recently brought back to Shibden. The case had been in the possession of a family in France for a number of years.

Calderdale Council’s Cabinet Member, Safer and Stronger Communities, Coun Pauline Nash, said the case was a real treasure.

“Anne Lister travelled widely and would have used this case to keep all of her writing materials safe.

“This latest award makes this item a true piece of history and a real treasure.”
