Famous faces to overlook cycle route

SOME of Harrogate’s most famous faces are to be chosen to adorn a new £400,000 cycleway over the Nidd Gorge viaduct.

The Sustrans cycle charity is currently constructing the Nidderdale Greenway between Bilton and Ripley, which is finally being built after more than a decade of legal wranglings.

The 3.7km route is expected to be open by spring 2013 and the charity is now asking for residents to nominate three local champions to be installed on a bench alongside the route.

Sustrans has drawn up a shortlist of 10 famous Harrogate faces including soothsayer Mother Shipton and Frederick Belmont, founder of Bettys Tearoom, for the public to choose from.

David Hall, Sustrans director in Yorkshire, said; “Creating safer routes for walking and cycling on is key to encouraging more people to travel on foot or bike for their local, everyday journeys.

“The portrait bench is a chance to celebrate some of the most well-known and influential icons of the area, giving the Nidderdale Greenway a unique, local significance that people who live here can be proud of.”

Voting takes place until March 23, with forms available at Harrogate and Knaresborough libraries.
