A HALIFAX rugby fan remains critically ill in hospital following a post-match assault and police said last night they believe other fans could hold the key to identifying those responsible.

David Singer, 32, of Halifax, had gone to watch his team play Featherstone Rovers in the Championship Grand Final at the Halliwell Jones Stadium, in Warrington, on Sunday.

As he was returning to his coach, which was parked in the car park at Dallam Lane, Warrington, at about 8.15pm on Sunday, he was assaulted, suffering a serious head injury which left him unconscious.

Police believe there is a “strong possibility” a Featherstone Rovers fan was responsible.

Mr Singer was taken to Warrington Hospital, and later transferred to Walton Hospital, Liverpool. He has undergone emergency surgery and remains in a critical condition. His family have remained at his bedside.

Det Insp Steve Jones, of the Cheshire Constabulary Major Investigation Team, said: “I firmly believe the information we need lies with the fans. It is very rare for such an attack to take place following a rugby match, and the majority of fans have come to enjoy the game.

“Yet we have a supporter lying in a hospital bed. I know that there are people out there who will know who is responsible, or will have strong suspicions.

“It is vital that you call us. This is not what rugby is about.”

Police last night urged both Halifax and Featherstone fans who may have witnessed the assault, or events leading up to it, to contact the Cheshire Police Incident Room on 0845 458 0000.
