Fans want home town tribute to ‘Spider from Mars’ Bowie bassist

DAVID Bowie’s former bassist Trevor Bolder deserves a permanent tribute in his home city of Hull, fans say.

The world-class rock musician, who also played with Uriah Heep and Wishbone Ash, died on Tuesday after a battle with cancer, aged 62.

Bolder, Mick Ronson, from Hull, and Mick ‘Woody’ Woodmansey, from Driffield, formed Bowie’s influential backing band Spiders from Mars in the early 1970s. One fan said while the city had honoured the poet Philip Larkin, the memorial stage to Ronson in Queens Gardens was “an insult to his name”.

In a tribute on a website he added: “Let’s hope he gets the credit he deserves (although Ronno never did). Maybe the council should think about proper recognition for these guys instead of poets from Coventry?”

Bolder, who lived in Little Weighton, continued to play with Uriah Heep, which he joined in 1976, until only a few months ago.

His death follows that of his younger brother Andy two months ago.

Bowie described Bolder as a “major inspiration” and “tremendous guy”, while Uriah Heep said he was “one of the finest and most influential bass players that Britain ever produced”.

Tony Beasty, who played in bands with Bolder’s elder brother Ian, said: “Trevor’s bass lines provided hooks for a lot of Bowie songs, like The Jean Genie. He was well-respected as a bass player and singer-songwriter and on top of that he was just a lovely guy with no delusions of grandeur. Liverpool has a statue of Billy Fury on Albert Dock. It would be really nice if they could do something with Mick and Trevor.”
