Farewell to grandfather she never met

SHE WAS the granddaughter he never met but yesterday her parents made sure she was there to say goodbye.

David Cameron’s father Ian died on holiday in France last week at the age of 77.

The Prime Minister’s wife Samantha had given birth to baby Florence a few days earlier and he never got to see his fourth grandchild. Yesterday, Florence was carried by Mr Cameron, accompanied by his wife, to the funeral at St Barnabas Church in Peasemore, Berkshire.

The Prime Minister’s attendance at the private ceremony meant he had to miss Pope Benedict XVI’s address to MPs in Parliament’s Westminster Hall.

He is due to meet the pontiff for talks today.

Ian Cameron, who was described by his son as “an amazing man”, died on Wednesday last week after suffering a stroke while on holiday with his wife Mary near the French port of Toulon. The Prime Minister flew to France after hearing he had fallen ill and was able to see him before he died.

A successful stockbroker who overcame the disability of being born with stunted legs, Mr Cameron is survived by his wife and their four children.
