A GROUP of Yorkshire singers who have raised thousands of pounds for farming help charity RABI over the last decade or so have announced they are embarking on their final round of concerts.

After 47 performances The Singing Farmers are taking their Farewell Tour around five local venues before the six-piece call time on a venture which first started in 2004.

Each of the five dates are in May. It will be the last time to see the combined talents of: Tony Richards of Egton Banks Farm, Glaisdale; Ken Jackson of Forlorn Hope Farm, Stubbs Walden; Charles Marwood of Foulrice, Whenby; Lloyd Lockwood of Whenby; Phillip Holden of Spennithorne; and Country Week journalist Chris Berry of Scholes, Leeds.

Singer and guitarist Chris said the decision had been made “with a heavy heart”.

He said: “The time has come for us to go out on a high. The Farewell Tour will feature five dates right across Yorkshire and into Durham and this will hopefully give everyone the opportunity to see The Singing Farmers for the last time.

“It’s been a great run and we’ve played for so many wonderful people as well as raising funds for a great cause.

“We will have played 52 concerts in all and will have raised what we understand to be well in excess of £100,000.”

The group plays a mix of music spanning country, and folk to songs from the shows and popular music largely from the 50s, 60s and 70s, and first set up its gigs to raise much-needed funds for RABI (Royal Agricultural Benevolent Institution).

Sally Conner, RABI’s regional organiser said: “Their enthusiasm and dedication has enabled us to raise the profile of the charity while also giving everyone a good time.”

Dates for the Farewell Tour include: Friday 6 May at Teesdale School, Barnard Castle at 7.30pm; Sunday 8 May at The Mart Theatre, Skipton at 2.30pm; Sunday 15 May at The Milton Rooms, Malton at 2.30pm; Friday 20 May at The Forum, Northallerton at 7.30pm; and Sunday 22 May at Riley Smith Hall, Tadcaster at 2.30pm.
