Farewell trek for retiring sergeant

THE longest-serving police sergeant in Barnsley is celebrating his retirement with a leaving party, but all his guests will be joining him on a 96-mile trek through the Scottish Highlands.

Richard Sainsbury, 51, and nine colleagues will walk the West Highland Way to raise money for two charities, Help the Heroes and the Alzheimer's Society, beginning on May 3.

Sgt Sainsbury said: "I have thoroughly enjoyed my time in Barnsley. I'll really miss the people and of course my colleagues who have worked alongside me to tackle important issues, particularly drugs."
