Farewell to Yorkshire floods campaigner Topsy Clinch, 92

THE funeral of a 92-year-old campaigner for better flood defences has taken place in her home town of Pickering.

Topsy Clinch hit the headlines last year when she and other residents set up a "room in the river" to highlight the flooding problems of the north Yorkshire town.

She also went to Downing Street to hand over a petition.

Her funeral took place at St Peter and St Paul's Church, Pickering.

Mrs Clinch was an active charity worker and had a career as nurse before she retired. She was also a great-grandmother.

Howard Keal, of Pickering Flood Defence Group, said: "Topsy had a tremendous fighting spirit and was a wonderful inspiration.

"At 92 she was planning a trip to the Amazon as her latest adventure and nothing was too much of a challenge.

"Topsy always came out smiling however tough things were and went all the way to the top in the battle for flood defences for the town.

"She met the Prime Minister Gordon Brown in Downing Street and was at the heart of the campaign to protect Pickering."
