Farm may face court over bug

Lawyers acting for the parents of twins who suffered kidney failure following an E.coli outbreak served proceedings against the farm involved yesterday.

Law firm Field Fisher Waterhouse is representing 17 families, including 25 children and one adult, after 93 people became infected following visits to Godstone Farm, near Redhill, Surrey, last year.

Seventy-six of the people affected by the outbreak were children under the age of 10.

The claim is for damages for personal injury and consequential loss.

Twins Todd and Aaron Furnell, now aged three, became infected with the bug while on a school trip to the farm last August.

They suffered kidney failure and spent several weeks in hospital, leaving Todd with 80 per cent kidney function and Aaron with 64 per cent, the law firm said. Both children may need kidney transplants in the future.

The law firm issued proceedings against the farm in June but its owners have declined to admit liability for the twins' illness. With no admission of liability, the serving of proceedings means the case could go to trial.
