Farmers' market draws the crowds

EAST Riding and Hull farmers, artists and craftspeople are benefiting from the monthly Humber Bridge farmers' market.

In addition to the freshest local produce, the market has become one of the largest monthly farmers' markets in Yorkshire, attracting between 3,000 and 5,000 visitors per month since its relaunch in April.

A representative of Driffield Agricultural Society, David Tite, said: "The market has been a real hit with the local community.

"All the food sold at the market is grown, reared or produced by stallholders from the region, who are directly involved in the production process. This means that visitors can be sure of the traceability, quality and welfare standards of all produce, while supporting the local farming economy."

Winter produce waiting to be snapped up includes root vegetables such as baking potatoes which are at their best this time of year and pumpkins, squashes and parsnips and Brussels sprouts, and goose for a festive roast.

Future markets aim to offer a huge selection of locally produced meat, vegetables, fruit, preserves, bread and cheese, as well as a range of local speciality produce, plus more than 30 craft stalls.
