Farmers set up shop in school yard to reveal secrets of food

Producers David Thompson, Jill Hairsine and David Shaw were at Tang Hall Primary School as the guests of the National Farmers' Union and farming education charity Face (Farming and Countryside Education).

More than 120 children met Annabelle, the model cow that loves to be milked. They also found out what cows eat and had a go at making their own butter. Other lessons included how farmers grow wheat for bread and there was the chance to have a go at grinding flour.

NFU regional director Richard Ellison said: "National research carried out last year highlighted that 17 per cent of both children and adults under the age of 30 believe eggs are a core ingredient of bread.

"Results like these remind us how important it is to teach children about the food they eat. To develop good eating habits, children as well as adults need to understand where food comes from, how it is produced and the fact that eating a range of different foods is crucial for a healthy, balanced diet."

The event was part of national Farmhouse Breakfast Week.

The school was also presented with a Why Farming Matters teaching pack developed in conjunction with Face.
