Farming proves fertile soil for world of art as auction mart turned into gallery

Art in the Pen begins at Thirks Auction Mart on Saturday (July 22) showcasing a wide range of art and artists.

The event began on a small scale 12 years ago and has grown into a hugely popular fixture in the North Yorkshire calendar.

It sees pens normally used to house cattle turned into exhibition spaces for painting, sculpture, jewellery, metalwork and textiles as well as art demonstrations.

Art in the Pen Thirsk will run over the course of this weekend with its companion event in Skipton set to be held on August 12 and 13.

Andy Lynan, creative director for Art in the Pen, said: “Our events are a great way for visitors to strike up conversations with our artists and meet other art and craft enthusiasts.

“Whether you’re a collector or buying for the first time, Art in the Pen provides a wonderful opportunity to discover new, emerging and established artists.”

Entrance for adults at today’s event is £2 with children under 16 allowed in free.
