Fashion worker must wait week in Japan

A FASHION worker who attempted to fly home from Japan for her father's 70th birthday had her flight turned around after hours in the air because of the volcanic ash cloud over Europe.

By the time the flight had returned to Japan, Helen Hernandez-Sanchez had been in the air for 11 hours and she will now miss tonight's family meal planned for her father Brian Clarke, of Birdwell, Barnsley.

Originally she was told the first available flight to the UK would be a week on Thursday but now she hopes to get a flight to Rome next Friday. She will then have to make her own arrangements to complete the journey across Europe.

Mrs Hernandez-Sanchez lives in London and is production director for a Japanese-owned fashion firm, so her work regularly takes her to the Far East.

She has been on a business trip but had arranged to fly home to celebrate her father's birthday.

Her mother Mavis said she hopes she may get a flight before Friday, adding "but there are a lot of people in the same situation".

The delay means Mrs Hernandez-Sanchez will be away from her Cuban husband for longer than expected. He had been home to the Caribbean and the pair were expecting to meet back in London.
