Feeling deflated, cyclists? Here’s a free pump

A FLAT tyre for a cyclist can mean a long walk to a garage if you haven’t got a pump handy.

But not in Sheffield, where cyclists can now top up the air in their tyres at handy locations across the city centre, thanks to funding from the Local Sustainable Transport Fund.

The free on-street air pumps are now available as part of a drive to make Sheffield a cycle-friendly city and improve safety for those on two wheels. The pumps are permanent fixtures, bolted to the ground and are suitable for both types of tyre valve and have a handy gauge to check pressure.

Councillor Jack Scott, the council’s cabinet member for environment, recycling and streetscene, said: “Sheffield is among the first cities in the country to introduce these bike pumps onto the streets.

“Each cycle journey made has a positive impact on the economy and environment, so providing this service for free is a good investment.”

A total of 10 pumps are planned across Sheffield. Six are already in place at Bridge Street/Millsands, Five Weirs Walk/Attercliffe Road, Hunters Bar roundabout, Moore Street underpass, Glossop Road (outside the shops) and Victoria Street/Leaveygreave Road. Four more pumps will follow at the Penistone Road/Rutland Road junction, Norfolk Road/Granville Road, Crowther Place/Mount Pleasant Road and the BMX park on Devonshire Green.

Russell Cutts, from Russell’s Bicycle Shed at Sheffield rail station, added: “We welcome the arrival of these bike pumps.”

Other cities with free cycle pumps include London, Bristol, Sydney, Vancouver, Copenhagen and Nantes.
