Ferry out of service for new gearbox

A NORTH Sea ferry is being taken out of service for a week to get a new gearbox fitted.

The Pride of York is being taken out of service from June 13 so the parts can be fitted.

The ferry, which was the largest ship to be launched on the Clyde since the Queen Elizabeth 2 when she was completed in 1986, has been plying the route between Hull and Zeebrugge for eight years.

A spokeswoman for P&O said: "This repair has been planned into the system and all customers have been made aware, with alternative travel arrangements on another sailing made for them."

The ship, which originally went into service as Norsea for use on the Hull to Rotterdam route, has two engines and two gearboxes and can cope on one.

She will be put back into service on the evening of June 21.
