Festival hopes to hit high notes as tickets go on sale

TICKETS for this year's summer festival in Burley in Wharfedale will go on sale on Monday.

The Burley Festival 2010 is set to scale new heights with an opera performance and a mobile climbing wall among the highlights of the 10-day programme.

Opera North singer Sarah Estill will headline A Night at the Opera in the village Methodist Church on August 28. The festival gets under way on August 21 with a series of events including an allotments open morning, a concert by the Anchor Dance Band from Shipley and a tea party and games supported by the Burley Oaks PTA.

The festival launch will take place at the Round House at 5pm with a jazz concert rounding off the opening day.

Several of last year's events will again form part of the schedule including the Classic Car Rally on August 22 and an extended farmers' market and craft market on the same day.

For younger visitors there will be a Big Top Holiday Club at the Methodist Church between August 23 and 27, as well as a series of science workshops aimed at four to 10 year-olds on August 24.

Among the other attractions for children are animation workshops, a computer games tournament, basketball coaching, sensible soccer and multi-sports.

The climbing wall will be in the village on August 24 with three sessions designed for different age groups, including those over-16.

Theatre lovers are in for a treat the following day with a double bill featuring performances by the Burley Millennium Theatre Group and the Bradford-based Paperzoo Theatre Company.
